The incident comes just two months after the USS Fitzgerald collided with a Philippine-flagged container ship off the coast of Japan, killing seven U.S. sailors in flooding aboard the vessel. Peters, a Fox News strategic analyst, said the Navy is perhaps the "paramount" branch of service for our national defense. He was asked how this could happen again. Odo Puiu Events invites you to watch …. If USS Fitzgerald Was Equipped With The Powerful AEGIS, Why Was It Hit? The $1.8 billion Fitzgerald is one of the most modern and technologically advanced warships afloat, capable of using its powerful sensors to look up into space, if necessary, and reach up to hit targets there with its battery of missiles. The destroyer still has a human crew, however, most of which was likely asleep around 2:30 a.m. local time when it collided with the Crystal. There was no moon over the waters south of Tokyo Bay, according to local accounts, and the channel there is frequently crowded with ships on their way into and out of the Japanese capital. Vessels of all sizes sail to other ports in Asia or head east into the vast Pacific. Sailors in the Fitzgerald's combat information center and on its bridge are responsible for using the ship's sensors to plot the location of each one, as well as the directions they're headed and the speed at which they're sailing. Officers and sailors must at all times keep what the Navy calls good "situational awareness" about not only what their own ship is doing, but about what might be ahead in the next patch of ocean where the Fitzgerald wants to sail. In 2012 a sibling of the Fitzgerald, the destroyer USS Porter, was in a congested, high-traffic seaway called the Strait of Hormuz — the ribbon of water that connects the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea — when it collided with an oil tanker. The Navy's investigation later found that as sailors tried to keep track of the traffic all around them, including those ships headed the other direction, they lost focus on their own immediate course ahead. Another similar possibility: the Fitzgerald wanted to sail east, say, and its course crossed over that of the Crystal, heading north. The destroyer might have been like someone trying to get across a busy street, thinking it could get out of the way of the oncoming cars in time — in this case, a miscalculation. Investigators will focus closely on what the crews on both ships were doing. When the fast attack submarine USS Hartford collided with the amphibious transport USS New Orleans in 2009, discipline on the sub was lax, the Navy later found. The Hartford's captain never came into the control room during the transit through the crowded Strait of Hormuz. The navigator was in the wardroom listening to his iPod. Thanks for watching. One unusual feature of the Azzam is its unusually small draft, which is the depth of water a ship needs to float. Its draft is only 14 feet! The Esso Atlantic and its sister ship Esso Pacific were one of only seven ships in history to surpass a carrying capacity of over half a million tons. It had accomplished this feat years before many of the more modern super cargo ships were even constructed. They were first built in 1977 and served for 35 years before being decommissioned in 2002. That is a pretty long life for a super cargo ship! The MV Blue Marlin is the mother of all cargo ships. It’s the ship you call when you need to ship a ship across the world. It is 712 feet long and 138 feet deep. It has a deck that’s equivalent in size to two soccer fields. It once carried 22 barges across the ocean from South Korea to the Netherlands. Another time it carried the Sea-Based X-Band Radar which is a 49,600 US ton rig. The biggest piece of cargo it has towed however is probably the Thunder Horse BP oil rig. It carried the 59,500 ton rig from South Korea to Corpus Christi, Texas. The TI Class Supertankers are a fleet of oil tanker ships that belong to Tankers International L.L.C. The fleet includes 4 ships that are called the TI Africa, TI Asia, TI Europe, and TI Oceania and are sometimes collectively referred to as “The Fantastic Four”. Each ship is designed to transport crude oil and weighs 517, 660 tons when fully loaded. When at full capacity one tanker can hold 3,166,353 barrels worth of oil. Of the four originally built in 2002 - 2003 only two are still active: TI Europe and TI Oceania. In 2015, the ship which is now widely regarded as the world’s largest container ship was christened. The MSC Oscar is an ultra-large cargo carrier ship that belongs to the Mediterranean Shipping Company. It was built in South Korea for 140 million US Dollars and now ships cargo all around the world. It is 240 feet high, 194 feet wide, and more impressively, 1, 297 feet long. If this ship was standing upright, it would be taller than the Empire State Building! The Oscar is capable of holding 19,224 standard shipping containers, which is what got it recognized as the world’s largest carrier ship in volume. The USS Enterprise (CVN-65) is a currently inactive United States Navy aircraft carrier. It was the world’s very first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier but the eighth vessel to have its name. She is 1,123 feet in length, which makes her the longest vessel built for the US Navy. Before being taken out of service in 2012, she was also the third oldest naval vessel in commission, being originally constructed in 1969. It was for a while considered to turn the carrier into a floating museum, but because of its two nuclear reactors, it wasn’t deemed practical or safe to do so. Instead, all of the electrical systems were turned off or removed, and part of the hull was cut open so that the reactors could be safely taken out.

The Myasishchev VM-T Atlant (Russian: Мясищев ВМ-Т «Атлант», with the "VM-T" ("BM-T") standing for Vladimir Myasishchev -- Transport) was a variant of Myasishchev's M-4 Molot bomber (the "3M") used as a strategic-airlift airplane. The VM-T was modified to carry rocket boosters and the Soviet space shuttles of the Buran program. It is also known as the 3M-T. Russia Listeni/ˈrʌʃə/ or /ˈrʊʃə/ (Russian: Россия, tr. Rossiya, IPA: [rɐˈsʲijə] ( listen)), also officially known as the Russian Federation[10] (Russian: Российская Федерация, tr. Rossiyskaya Federatsiya, IPA: [rɐˈsʲijskəjə fʲɪdʲɪˈrat͡sɨjə] ( listen)), is a country in northern Eurasia.[11] It is a federal semi-presidential republic, comprising 83 federal subjects. From northwest to southeast, Russia shares land borders with Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland (both with Kaliningrad Oblast), Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia, and North Korea. It shares maritime borders with Japan by the Sea of Okhotsk and the US state of Alaska across the Bering Strait. At 17,075,400 square kilometres (6,592,800 sq mi), Russia is the largest country in the world, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area. Russia is also the world's ninth most populous nation with 143 million people as of 2012.[12] Extending across the entirety of northern Asia and much of Europe, Russia spans nine time zones and incorporates a wide range of environments and landforms. The Russian Air Force (Russian: Военно-воздушные cилы России, tr. Voyenno-vozdushnye sily Rossii) is the aerial warfare service branch of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. It is currently under the command of Lieutenant General Viktor Bondarev. The Russian Navy has its own air arm, the Russian Naval Aviation, which is the former Soviet Aviatsiya Voyenno Morskogo Flota ("Naval Aviation"), or AV-MF). The Air Force was formed from parts of the former Soviet Air Forces after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991--92. Boris Yeltsin's creation of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation on 7 May 1992, can be taken as a convenient formation date for the new Air Force. Since that time, the Air Force has suffered severe setbacks due to lack of resources, and has constantly shrunk in size. Since Vladimir Putin became President of the Russian Federation however, much more money has been allocated to the Armed Forces as a whole. The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven American uniformed services. Initially part of the United States Army, the USAF was formed as a separate branch of the military on 18 September 1947 under the National Security Act of 1947.[5] It is the most recent branch of the U.S. military to be formed, and is the largest and one of the world's most technologically advanced air forces. The USAF articulates its core functions as Nuclear Deterrence Operations, Special Operations, Air Superiority, Global Integrated ISR, Space Superiority, Command and Control, Cyberspace Superiority, Personnel Recovery, Global Precision Attack, Building Partnerships, Rapid Global Mobility and Agile Combat Support.[6] The United States of America (USA or U.S.A.), commonly referred to as the United States (US or U.S.), America, or simply the States, is a federal republic[10][11] consisting of 50 states and a federal district. The 48 contiguous states and the federal district of Washington, D.C. are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is the northwestern part of North America, west of Canada and east of Russia which is across the Bering Strait in Asia, and the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-North Pacific. The country also has five populated and nine unpopulated territories in the Pacific and the Caribbean. The Airbus A380 is a double-deck, wide-body, four-engine jet airliner. It is the world's largest passenger airliner; many airports have upgraded their facilities to accommodate it because of its size. Initially named Airbus A3XX, Airbus designed the aircraft to challenge Boeing's monopoly in the large-aircraft market; the A380 made its first flight on 27 April 2005 and began commercial service in October 2007 with Singapore Airlines. The Lockheed Martin/Boeing F-22 Raptor is a single-seat, twin-engine fifth-generation supermaneuverable fighter aircraft that uses stealth technology. It was designed primarily as an air superiority fighter, but has additional capabilities that include ground attack, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence roles.[5] Lockheed Martin Aeronautics is the prime contractor and is responsible for the majority of the airframe, weapon systems and final assembly of the F-22.

Radio chatter recording likely from a USMC combat correspondent reporting for a radio news and was interrupted when a tank commander spots enemy movement nearby. The commander radios the gunner to open fire with the tank's machinegun. That banging and screeching noise you hear is the turret rotating and adjusting. The tank is most probably a M4 Sherman as it was the tank the marines deployed on the island and engaging with what sounds like a Japanese MG nest and its crew. This could also be one of Alvin M. Josephy, Jr's broadcasts but I could be wrong. UPDATE I took it from a half-hour August 1944 radio program featuring interviews of Marines that participated in the Guam landing. The show explains how correspondents from the USMC were unable to deploy on the beach with the cmbat units and were able to pick up on shortwave the transmissions of the tanks while remaining on the ships. There was no mistake that it was the Guam landing by USMC forces. - Youtuber PhilaVideo https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeYQyuwro2UPtOpyd2Om8Ow Credits Images taken from various War Department archival footage. USS McCain the 4th Navy warship to crash in Asia this year By JULIA JACOBO, LUIS MARTINEZ WATCH: 10 soldiers are still missing after the U.S.S. John McCain collided with an oil tanker off the coast of Shanghai. The collision between the USS John S. McCain and a Singapore merchant ship today marks the fourth time in the past eight months that a ship in the U.S. Navy's Pacific fleet has been involved in a crash. In the wake of the McCain’s collision, which left 10 sailors missing and another five injured, Adm. John Richardson has ordered a broad review of recent incidents involving U.S. Navy ships in the Pacific. "He [Richardson] is going to look at all factors, not just the immediate ones which will fall rightly under the fleet commander's investigation of what happened to his ship," U.S. Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis said today. Tugboats from Singapore assist the USS John S. McCain as it steers towards Changi Naval Base in Singapore, after a collision with a merchant ship, Aug. 21, 2017. There will also be an "operational pause and a deeper look into how we train and certify forces operating in and around Japan,” Richardson's office said The review will focus on the pace of operations for Navy ships in the Pacific pertaining to maintenance, equipment and personnel. And it will also focus on surface warfare training, including tactical and navigational proficiency. The USS John S. McCain is seen after a collision in Singapore, Aug. 21, 2017. All four crashes were confined to Asian waters, and the Navy is "not having the same problem in the Atlantic and Mediterranean," said Steve Ganyard, an ABC News contributor, retired Marine colonel and a former deputy assistant secretary of state. In its review, the Navy will need to determine why "these mishaps keep happening" with the Pacific fleet, Ganyard told ABC News. "Things like this should never happen," he said. "But it's happened twice in two months, so they need to get to the bottom of that." The Navy will likely look at basic procedures such as training, staffing and operational tempo, or how often the crew is deployed, Ganyard said. Ganyard said it is concerning that the crashes occurred during "basic seamanship" instead of in the course of combat operations. "It's the difference between having your driver's license and being a Formula One racer," he said. "You both know how to drive but one's just the basics. This is taking the ship to sea and getting it back safely without running into anybody." It is "really unusual" for sailors to get hurt or lose their lives at sea, Ganyard said. He estimates that the repairs for the most recent crashes alone -- the USS Fitzgerald and the USS John S. McCain – will cost hundreds of millions of dollars. "It wouldn't be surprising to see a bill upwards of a billion dollars for these two ships," he said. Here's a look at the U.S. Navy warship crashes in 2017: Jan. 31: The USS Antietam runs aground off coast of Japan The USS Antietam, a guided-missile cruiser, ran aground Jan. 31 off the coast of Japan, damaging its propellers and spilling oil into the water. It grounded near the U.S. Naval base in Yokosuka, Japan, after anchoring out in high winds, the Navy Times reported. The U.S. Navy's guided missile cruiser USS Antietam (CG-54) is seen docked at a port in Manila, March 14, 2016. The crew noticed the ship was dragging its anchor before getting it back underway, according to the Navy Times, adding that the crew then felt the ship shudder and lose pitch control of its propellers. About 1,100 gallons of oil were dumped into the Tokyo Bay, the Navy Times reported. No one was injured. A man walks near the USS Antietam, a Ticonderoga class guided missile cruiser, which is moored in Hong Kong, on Nov. 12, 2013. A Navy investigation revealed that the former Capt. Joseph Carrian of the USS Antietam was "ultimately responsible" for the ship’s running aground, causing an estimated $4.2 million in damage, Stars and Stripes reported earlier this month. May 9: The USS Lake Champlain collides with South Korean fishing boat The USS Lake Champlain, also a guided-missile cruiser, collided with a South Korean fishing boat in the Sea of Japan May 9. An F/A-18E Super Hornet from the Kestrels of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 137 lands on the flight deck of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) as the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain (CG 57) (L) and the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) accompany, May 3, 2017, in the western Pacific Ocean. The ship was engaged in routine training when it collided with the 9.8-ton fishing boat off South Korea's east coast, The Associated Press reported. No one was injured in the incident. The Navy ship tried to alert the fishing boat before the collision but it was too late. June 17: The USS Fitzgerald collides with a Philippine co

Natural Sound A Filipino sailor was killed when a small chemical tanker burst into flames after colliding with a large vessel in the Straits of Malacca. Eastern Bliss burned for 14 hours in the Straits of Malacca after a collision with a larger ship that killed one sailor. 17 other crew members, including the South Korean captain were rescued. The Japanese owned tanker's engine room was destroyed in the ensuing fire. A Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre ship extinguished the fire and there was no spillage of the chemical cargo or oil. The collision occurred off Port Dickson, 120 kilometres (75 miles) southwest of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia and involved an Indian registered general cargo vessel. The 600 kilometre (375 mile) long Straits of Malacca between the Pacific and Indian oceans is used by as many as 3,00 vessels daily. An investigation by the MRCC is underway. Read full details of the news in this link: http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-41037071 A commercial LNG tanker has sailed across the colder, northern route from Europe to Asia without the protection of an ice-breaker for the first time. The specially-built ship completed the crossing in just six-and-a-half days setting a new record, according to tanker's Russian owners. The 300-metre-long Sovcomflot ship, the Christophe de Margerie, was carrying gas from Norway to South Korea. Rising Arctic temperatures are boosting commercial shipping across this route. The Christophe de Margerie is the world's first and, at present, only ice-breaking LNG carrier. The ship, which features a lightweight steel reinforced hull, is the largest commercial ship to receive Arc7 certification, which means it is capable of travelling through ice up to 2.1m thick. On this trip it was able to keep up an average speed of 14 knots despite sailing through ice that was over one-metre-thick in places. tankerImage copyrightSOVCOMFLOT Image caption The ship is the first of a new fleet specially constructed to sail through ice all year round On its maiden voyage earlier this year, the Christophe de Margerie docked in the Russian port of Sabetta. Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the crew and energy company officials gathered on the ship's bridge, saying: "This is a big event in the opening up of the Arctic." The Russian owners, Sovcomflot, will use this ice-breaking tanker to export gas from the Yamal peninsula to Asian markets later this year. It will be the first of a planned fleet of 15 that will transport gas from these ice bound fields all year round. "Previously there was only a window of navigation from our summer to autumn, but this ship will be able to sail westwards from Sabetta which is the Yamal energy port, all year round and eastwards from July to December," said Sovcomflot spokesman Bill Spears. "Before the northern sea route was only open for four months and you had to have ice-breakers - so it's a significant development." In 2016, the northern sea route saw 19 full transits from the Atlantic to the Pacific. High insurance and large fees for Russian ice-breakers are still discouraging some ship owners from the riskier northern route. But the economic benefits are attractive - the Christophe de Margerie took just 19 days for the entire voyage, around 30% faster than going by Suez. There has been an overall decline in Arctic sea ice over the past 30 years, linked by scientists to rising global temperatures. This year, according to the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC), the annual maximum extent of Arctic sea ice hit a record low for the third year in a row. PutinImage copyrightOLGA MALTSEVA Image caption The Russian President speaking during the naming ceremony for the new tanker earlier this year This diminution of northern ice is something that the Russian ship owners believe will continue well into the future. "If there was a material change in the ice thickness it would change the period of the year that the ship could move through the Northern Sea Route," said Bill Spears from Sovcomflot. "There is an assumption that the ice is not going to thicken dramatically for the economic life of these vessels, which could be over 30 years." Environmental campaigners, though, are worried that increased traffic in this inhospitable region could have potentially significant effects. "We're concerned that this is a commercial opportunity that has only opened up because of global warming, and we're especially concerned that having taken advantage of the thinning of the ice, shipping operations are now expanding in that part of the world," said John Maggs from Seas at Risk. "It is not like sailing in open water, even if you have an ice classed ship, the risks are dramatically increased." As well as the risk of accident or spillage, there are worries that some of the ships that will sail along this route will be powering their engines with heavier, dirtier marine fuels. The black carbon that they produce could be very damaging to snow and ice in the region, increasing the melting. "The environmental risks are enormous," said John Maggs. "You are taking industrial-sized installations and moving them through a pristine Arctic environment, so it's going to have an impact - and what are we getting in return, slightly shorter journey times? A 30% gain is not much of gain to me."

Ralph Peters said the latest collision between a U.S. warship and a merchant vessel in the Asia-Pacific region points out serious problems within the U.S. Navy. The USS John S. McCain collided with an oil tanker near Singapore early Monday. Ten U.S. sailors were missing following the crash, with five injured. "The obvious conclusion is the officers on the bridge and the seamen don't have basic navigation skills. They no longer are drilled in basic seamanship. They don't have the discipline they should. I love the U.S. Navy ... but it's in a bad way right now," he said on Fox Business Network. An active-duty Navy officer echoed the concerns to Fox News, questioning the level of training for young officers. "It’s not the same level of training you used to get," the officer said.

Diving operations are set to begin on Monday as American, Singaporean and Malaysian armed forces search for the 10 missing U.S. sailors after an early-morning collision between a Navy destroyer and a tanker near Singapore -- the second collision involving a Navy ship in the Asia-Pacific region in two months. U.S. Navy officials told Fox News diving operations will begin inside the flooded compartments aboard USS John S. McCain. USS America, a large amphibious assault ship, arrived in the Singapore port near the stricken Navy destroyer and will lead the diving efforts, officials said. Trending Articles
