• Superships - Launching a Leviathan

The TI Class of supertankers are currently the four largest ships in the world (by displacement, deadweight tonnage ≈ cargo mass, and gross tonnage, a formula value based on internal volume, not mass). The class comprises the ships TI Africa, TI Asia, TI Europe and TI Oceania, where the "TI" refers to the VLCC Tanker Pool operator Tankers International L.L.C. The class were the first ULCCs (ultra-large crude carriers) to be built in 25 years.[2] Compared to the TI Class, the Maersk Triple E class container ships are longer and have a higher cargo volume, including above deck containers. The previous largest ship, the supertanker Seawise Giant, was scrapped in 2010. Mega ships Big ships

Azzam is an Arabic word that translates to “resolute” and is also the name of what is widely regarded as the world’s longest private yacht. Azzam was commissioned by Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the UAE. Estimates put the cost of building this yacht at around 605 million US dollars. It is 590 feet in length and is capable of cruising around warm waters at high speeds. One unusual feature of the Azzam is its unusually small draft, which is the depth of water a ship needs to float. Its draft is only 14 feet! The Esso Atlantic and its sister ship Esso Pacific were one of only seven ships in history to surpass a carrying capacity of over half a million tons. It had accomplished this feat years before many of the more modern super cargo ships were even constructed. They were f...

Read full details of the news in this link: http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-41037071 A commercial LNG tanker has sailed across the colder, northern route from Europe to Asia without the protection of an ice-breaker for the first time. The specially-built ship completed the crossing in just six-and-a-half days setting a new record, according to tanker's Russian owners. The 300-metre-long Sovcomflot ship, the Christophe de Margerie, was carrying gas from Norway to South Korea. Rising Arctic temperatures are boosting commercial shipping across this route. The Christophe de Margerie is the world's first and, at present, only ice-breaking LNG carrier. The ship, which features a lightweight steel reinforced hull, is the largest commercial ship to receive Arc7 certification, which means it is capable of travelling through ice up to 2.1m thick. On this trip it was able to keep up an average speed of 14 knots despite sailing through ice that was over one-metre-thick in places. tankerImage copyrightSOVCOMFLOT Image caption The ship is the first of a new fleet specially constructed to sail through ice all year round On its maiden voyage earlier this year, the Christophe de Margerie docked in the Russian port of Sabetta. Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the crew and energy company officials gathered on the ship's bridge, saying: "This is a big event in the opening up of the Arctic." The Russian owners, Sovcomflot, will use this ice-breaking tanker to export gas from the Yamal peninsula to Asian markets later this year. It will be the first of a planned fleet of 15 that will transport gas from these ice bound fields all year round. "Previously there was only a window of navigation from our summer to autumn, but this ship will be able to sail westwards from Sabetta which is the Yamal energy port, all year round and eastwards from July to December," said Sovcomflot spokesman Bill Spears. "Before the northern sea route was only open for four months and you had to have ice-breakers - so it's a significant development." In 2016, the northern sea route saw 19 full transits from the Atlantic to the Pacific. High insurance and large fees for Russian ice-breakers are still discouraging some ship owners from the riskier northern route. But the economic benefits are attractive - the Christophe de Margerie took just 19 days for the entire voyage, around 30% faster than going by Suez. There has been an overall decline in Arctic sea ice over the past 30 years, linked by scientists to rising global temperatures. This year, according to the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC), the annual maximum extent of Arctic sea ice hit a record low for the third year in a row. PutinImage copyrightOLGA MALTSEVA Image caption The Russian President speaking during the naming ceremony for the new tanker earlier this year This diminution of northern ice is something that the Russian ship owners believe will continue well into the future. "If there was a material change in the ice thickness it would change the period of the year that the ship could move through the Northern Sea Route," said Bill Spears from Sovcomflot. "There is an assumption that the ice is not going to thicken dramatically for the economic life of these vessels, which could be over 30 years." Environmental campaigners, though, are worried that increased traffic in this inhospitable region could have potentially significant effects. "We're concerned that this is a commercial opportunity that has only opened up because of global warming, and we're especially concerned that having taken advantage of the thinning of the ice, shipping operations are now expanding in that part of the world," said John Maggs from Seas at Risk. "It is not like sailing in open water, even if you have an ice classed ship, the risks are dramatically increased." As well as the risk of accident or spillage, there are worries that some of the ships that will sail along this route will be powering their engines with heavier, dirtier marine fuels. The black carbon that they produce could be very damaging to snow and ice in the region, increasing the melting. "The environmental risks are enormous," said John Maggs. "You are taking industrial-sized installations and moving them through a pristine Arctic environment, so it's going to have an impact - and what are we getting in return, slightly shorter journey times? A 30% gain is not much of gain to me."

English/Nat Four naval ships, three British and one French, have arrived in Hong Kong for a four day visit to the territory. The visit is the first time there has been a British and French navy presence in the region since NATO's bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade during last year's Yugoslav conflict. The vessels in the U-K naval task group are Britain's H-M-S Cornwall, H-M-S Newcastle, R-F-A Fort Victoria and a specially invited French ship, F-S Aconit. The U-K task group arrived in Hong Kong harbour on Tuesday. The three British ships were accompanied by a French ship, which was invited to demonstrate co-operation between NATO allies, and their effective deployment in joint missions. It is the third visit by British naval vessels since the handover of Hong Kong to China, but the first since the NATO bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, during the Kosovo conflict. The French ship, F-S Aconit, is an example of highly advanced stealth ship that can evade detection by radar. It's presence in the task force is significant as France has sold similar state of the art military vessels to Taiwan. The Beijing government is very sensitive to Taiwan's purchasing of military technology from foreign powers. The U-K naval task group are on a trip to the Asia-Pacific region, designed to demonstrate the U-K's commitment to the region and to display its military technology to potential Asian clients. The British ships include, H-M-S Cornwall, an antisubmarine frigate, H-M-S Newcastle, an anti-warfare destroyer and R-F-A (Royal Fleet Auxiliary) Fort Victoria, a combined tanker and stores support ship. The task group's main exercise in the Asia-Pacific zone is with the force of the Five Power Defence Arrangement, a group formed in 1971, by the governments of Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore, to create military co-operation in the region. The ships activities in Hong Kong will be purely routine, providing a chance to meet and greet members of the Chinese army (P-L-A). The task group's next port of call, Shanghai, will give the visitors a chance to conduct exercises with the Chinese navy and strengthen relations with Beijing. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We'll be working with the PLA (People's Liberation Army). Some of them are coming on board to have a look, we'll go and have a look at their ships and we'll do an exercise with them, because the UK government is very keen to strengthen ties between the two countries at all levels and one of them obviously is military." SUPER CAPTION: Captain Tim McClement, HMS Cornwall The task group is due to return to the United Kingdom on November 23. From northwest to southeast, Russia shares land borders with Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland (both with Kaliningrad Oblast), Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia, and North Korea. It shares maritime borders with Japan by the Sea of Okhotsk and the US state of Alaska across the Bering Strait. At 17,075,400 square kilometres (6,592,800 sq mi), Russia is the largest country in the world, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area. Russia is also the world's ninth most populous nation with 143 million people as of 2012.[12] Extending across the entirety of northern Asia and much of Europe, Russia spans nine time zones and incorporates a wide range of environments and landforms. The Russian Air Force (Russian: Военно-воздушные cилы России, tr. Voyenno-vozdushnye sily Rossii) is the aerial warfare service branch of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. It is currently under the command of Lieutenant General Viktor Bondarev. The Russian Navy has its own air arm, the Russian Naval Aviation, which is the former Soviet Aviatsiya Voyenno Morskogo Flota ("Naval Aviation"), or AV-MF). The Air Force was formed from parts of the former Soviet Air Forces after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991--92. Boris Yeltsin's creation of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation on 7 May 1992, can be taken as a convenient formation date for the new Air Force. Since that time, the Air Force has suffered severe setbacks due to lack of resources, and has constantly shrunk in size. Since Vladimir Putin became President of the Russian Federation however, much more money has been allocated to the Armed Forces as a whole. The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven American uniformed services. Initially part of the United States Army, the USAF was formed as a separate branch of the military on 18 September 1947 under the National Security Act of 1947.[5] It is the most recent branch of the U.S. military to be formed, and is the largest and one of the world's most technologically advanced air forces. The USAF articulates its core functions as Nuclear Deterrence Operations, Special Operations, Air Superiority, Global Integrated ISR, Space Superiority, Command and Control, Cyberspace Superiority, Personnel Recovery, Global Precision Attack, Building Partnerships, Rapid Global Mobility and Agile Combat Support.[6] The United States of America (USA or U.S.A.), commonly referred to as the United States (US or U.S.), America, or simply the States, is a federal republic[10][11] consisting of 50 states and a federal district. The 48 contiguous states and the federal district of Washington, D.C. are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is the northwestern part of North America, west of Canada and east of Russia which is across the Bering Strait in Asia, and the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-North Pacific. The country also has five populated and nine unpopulated territories in the Pacific and the Caribbean. The Airbus A380 is a double-deck, wide-body, four-engine jet airliner. It is the world's largest passenger airliner; many airports have upgraded their facilities to accommodate it because of its size. Initially named Airbus A3XX, Airbus designed the aircraft to challenge Boeing's monopoly in the large-aircraft market; the A380 made its first flight on 27 April 2005 and began commercial service in October 2007 with Singapore Airlines. The Lockheed Martin/Boeing F-22 Raptor is a single-seat, twin-engine fifth-generation supermaneuverable fighter aircraft that uses stealth technology. It was designed primarily as an air superiority fighter, but has additional capabilities that include ground attack, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence roles.[5] Lockheed Martin Aeronautics is the prime contractor and is responsible for the majority of the airframe, weapon systems and final assembly of the F-22.

Wargaming SEA has announced their very first league in Asia Pacific, TanksAsia Masters -- an unprecedented foray into the global eSports scene to bridge the gap between the World of Tanks' gaming communities. The league signifies a key milestone for Wargaming SEA and it aims to cement itself as one of the staple titles in the competitive gaming scene. Catering exclusively to Asia Pacific (APAC) players, this league is unique in the fact that it provides for all forms of team make up and offers players from different parts of the region the opportunity to represent their countries in the National series and play with their preferred teams. TanksAsia Masters deviates from the norm, running on a points system as opposed to the standard tournament format. Divided into 3 levels, Masters, Regular and Challenge, an even playing field is set up for all who seek to reign. The league will consist of three seasons. The Open Season will act as a qualifier to the TanksAsia Season One and the subsequent season will see the top 8 APAC National teams being seeded into Master Play-off to battle it out for fame, glory and a chance to walk away with a piece of an incredible total prize pool of USD300,000. They were first built in 1977 and served for 35 years before being decommissioned in 2002. That is a pretty long life for a super cargo ship! The MV Blue Marlin is the mother of all cargo ships. It’s the ship you call when you need to ship a ship across the world. It is 712 feet long and 138 feet deep. It has a deck that’s equivalent in size to two soccer fields. It once carried 22 barges across the ocean from South Korea to the Netherlands. Another time it carried the Sea-Based X-Band Radar which is a 49,600 US ton rig. The biggest piece of cargo it has towed however is probably the Thunder Horse BP oil rig. It carried the 59,500 ton rig from South Korea to Corpus Christi, Texas. The TI Class Supertankers are a fleet of oil tanker ships that belong to Tankers International L.L.C. The fleet includes 4 ships that are called the TI Africa, TI Asia, TI Europe, and TI Oceania and are sometimes collectively referred to as “The Fantastic Four”. Each ship is designed to transport crude oil and weighs 517, 660 tons when fully loaded. When at full capacity one tanker can hold 3,166,353 barrels worth of oil. Of the four originally built in 2002 - 2003 only two are still active: TI Europe and TI Oceania. In 2015, the ship which is now widely regarded as the world’s largest container ship was christened. The MSC Oscar is an ultra-large cargo carrier ship that belongs to the Mediterranean Shipping Company. It was built in South Korea for 140 million US Dollars and now ships cargo all around the world. It is 240 feet high, 194 feet wide, and more impressively, 1, 297 feet long. If this ship was standing upright, it would be taller than the Empire State Building! The Oscar is capable of holding 19,224 standard shipping containers, which is what got it recognized as the world’s largest carrier ship in volume. The USS Enterprise (CVN-65) is a currently inactive United States Navy aircraft carrier. It was the world’s very first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier but the eighth vessel to have its name. She is 1,123 feet in length, which makes her the longest vessel built for the US Navy. Before being taken out of service in 2012, she was also the third oldest naval vessel in commission, being originally constructed in 1969. It was for a while considered to turn the carrier into a floating museum, but because of its two nuclear reactors, it wasn’t deemed practical or safe to do so. Instead, all of the electrical systems were turned off or removed, and part of the hull was cut open so that the reactors could be safely taken out.

Russia supplied over 250 Sukhoi Su aircraft to the Asia-Pacific countries, a number of which are using the Sukhoi Su-30 Flanker jet as the air forces’ main fighter aircraft, the director general of the Russian state arms exporter Rosoboronexport said Wednesday. “The Russian aviation equipment, the multirole fighter jets of Su and MiG type, is in increased demand in Asia Pacific. Over 250 Su aircraft are supplied to the Asia-Pacific region. Su-30 fighter jets are chosen as the main fighter aircraft of the air forces in several countries of the region,” Alexander Mikheev said at the Paris Air Show-2017. Multirole fighters Sukhoi Su-35 and Su-30MK, trainer-fighter Yakovlev Yak-130, inflight refuelling tanker aircraft Ilyushin Il-78MK-90 and multirole amphibian aircraft Beriev Be-200 generate the most interest among the customers from the Asia Pacific region, Mikheev added. Natural Sound A Filipino sailor was killed when a small chemical tanker burst into flames after colliding with a large vessel in the Straits of Malacca. Eastern Bliss burned for 14 hours in the Straits of Malacca after a collision with a larger ship that killed one sailor. 17 other crew members, including the South Korean captain were rescued. The Japanese owned tanker's engine room was destroyed in the ensuing fire. A Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre ship extinguished the fire and there was no spillage of the chemical cargo or oil. The collision occurred off Port Dickson, 120 kilometres (75 miles) southwest of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia and involved an Indian registered general cargo vessel. The 600 kilometre (375 mile) long Straits of Malacca between the Pacific and Indian oceans is used by as many as 3,00 vessels daily. An investigation by the MRCC is underway.
